Counter-Strike: Classic-Offensive cancelled
Through a post on X, the official Counter-Strike: Classic Offensive account confirmed that that project has been cancelled. "After eight years of development and despite being officially greenlit by Valve in 2017, we are devastated to announce the cancellation of Classic Offensive.", wrote the official handle on X.
The creator of Counter-Strike: Classic Offensive (CSCO), ZooL, had even revealed the initial set of maps that would be featured in upon the project's. The announcement came just days before the anticipated launch of the mod that aimed to bring back elements of classic Counter-Strike games, particularly CS Source.
However, hours before it's release the CSCO handle on X announced that the release had been halted as per Valve's instructions. This wasn't the first time the project faced challenges with Valve. Despite initially receiving approval to continue development while following Source Engine Distribution Guidelines, Valve allegedly pulled the mod's Steamworks page and removed the project from the platform without communicating with the developers. ZooL's post about this situation gained significant attention at the time.
After Valve handed CSCO a cease and desist notice before launch, they followed up clarifying that "derivative content" based on Valve's intellectual properties was not allowed says CSCO in their post on X.
CS: Legacy, was a similar project that was announced recently. Unlike Classic Offensive, CS: Legacy is a "fully standalone remake of Counter-Strike 1.6, built from the ground up on Valve's official Source Engine SDK", meaning which CS: Legacy is not a mod for any iteration of Counter-Strike but a Counter-Strike iteration itself.
