Valve makes reloads more punishing

New update overhauls reloading

In the latest update to Counter-Strike 2, Valve has introduced arguably one of the biggest meta changes to the game in recent times. Reloading, a mechanic that was often worry-free has now been modelled into a much more punishing mechanic. Gone are the days where one could fire a couple of bullets, spam a smoke or shoot a teammate's leg and hit the reload button to top off the existing ammo, keeping the rest intact.

Now when a weapon is reloaded, the entire magazine is swapped out, discarding the existing bullets in the magazine. For instance, an AK-47 comes equipped with three reserve magazines on top of the 30 bullets in the chamber. When a player reloads at 25 bullets, the ammo count goes back to 30 but discards the existing ammo (25) and consumes one reserve magazine.

This overhaul makes pre-firing, spamming smokes and attempting wallbangs much more riskier with weapons like the M4a1s. The AWP which has already received numerous nerfs in recent times now gets pushed further down, with five bullets in the chamber and two reserve magazines.

The update also comes with several map guide implementations. Here are Valve's release notes:

GAMEPLAY

  • Reloading has been refactored to encourage more careful consideration of the use of ammo. When you reload a magazine-fed weapon, all remaining ammo in the magazine is discarded and a new, full magazine is taken from the reserves.

  • Reserve ammunition is now represented either as number of magazines, shells, or bullets, depending on the weapon.

  • The fill-level of the current weapon is now displayed below the ammo count.

  • Tuned reserve magazine counts per-weapon.

MAP GUIDES

  • Limited map guides are now available in Competitive and Retakes (first 5 rounds of the half, 30 node max).

  • sv_allow_annotations_access_level supports 3 values: 0 – disabled. 1 – limited view. 2 – full and editable.

  • sv_annotation_limits_max_rounds_per_half (default 5) determines how many rounds into the half guides are allowed. -1 for unlimited.

  • Minimal starter map guides have been added for all Active Duty maps.

WORKSHOP MAPS

  • Friends playing a Practice or Workshop map can be joined through the friends menu if they have Open Party set.
