IEM Cologne 2026 Playoffs: Preview

All three Swiss system iterations of the IEM Cologne 2026 Major has come to a close, each more electrifying than the one before. Before looking at the playoffs matchups, lets quickly reflect on how things have went down so far. A couple of Asian and Australian teams were in action during Stage 1 but only TYLOO and FlyQuest managed to advance. The first stage of the Major also gave us a once-in-a-lifetime comeback in the very last game featuring BIG and NRG.

The North-American roster were up 12-0 as their camp lit up with giggles and banter which slowly vanished. The Germans put up an unimaginable 12-0 streak while playing each and every round with one foot out of the ring. Every single round could have been BIG's last one of Cologne but the Germans swept a 16-0 to send NRG packing. Stage 2 completely belonged to donk as the stellar rifler hard-carried Spirit into Stage 3 with a 3-0 record. TYLOO and FlyQuest ended their Major campaigns here.

Spirit put up yet another 3-0 in Stage 3 alongside FURIA. Spirit has played six games at the Cologne Major so far and donk has topped the charts for the Russian side every single time. 9z handed Vitality a massive upset in the 1-0 pool but ZywOo powered his side to a 3-1 group stage nonetheless. Aurora and Falcons qualified with 3-1 records while 9z, BetBoom and G2 scraped through from the 3-2 pool. For the first time since Perfect World Shanghai 2024, The MongolZ have failed to make it to the playoffs.

The playoffs will begin this Thursday, 18th June 2026 with Aurora taking on BetBoom in the opener. The second quarter-final of the day sees FURIA take on 9z in a South-American derby. The head-to-head between the two sides remain pretty close with FURIA taking down 9z in their last head-to-head at the Perfect World Shanghai 2024 Major.

The action continues on Friday, with Spirit kicking off proceedings against G2. Spirit clearly have G2's number in the head-to-heads as the Russian side has taken down G2 13 times including 2-0s at PGL Astana 2026, IEM Rio 2026 and ESL Pro League Season 23. G2 has just four wins against Spirit.

The last quarter-finals matchup has become one of the most anticipated ones as Vitality take on Falcons. Both teams possess massive firepower in each and every department. The trio of m0NESY, NiKo and kyousuke will clash against ZywOo, ropz and mezii. Both sides have fierce entry fraggers in tesses and flameZ but the biggest clash will likely be the brains behind the brawns. apEX and karrigan top the list of most Major appearances and will now face off in the quarter-final of IEM Cologne 2026 with some of Counter-Strike's biggest names in their arsenals.

The winner of the Vitality-Falcons matchup might likely clash with Spirit in the semi-final if the Russian side take down G2 in the quarter-final.

IEM Cologne 2026 will conclude with a best-of-five grand-final on Sunday, 21st June 2026 as the winner walks away with a $500,000 cash prize.
