Valve cancels MRQs for Budapest Major

StarLadder Budapest 2025 Major's MRQs were set to take place in October

StarLadder drops a bombshell announcement yesterday, stating that the MRQs for the StarLadder Budapest 2025 Major will be cancelled. "Valve has issued an important update which impacts the entire CS2 competitive ecosystem this season", said StarLadder prefixing their announcement through their blogpost.

Upon the MRQs' cancellation, 32 teams will secure direct invites to different stages of the Major based on the Valve Regional Standings. While the Major Regional Qualifiers are cancelled, the invite dates will still remain the same- 8th October 2025.

Valve announced the switch from RMRs to MRQs in early January 2025, a short while after the Shanghai Major had concluded. The MRQ system has now been binned after just a single showing.

At this point we believe that a separate qualification process for the Major is both unnecessary and disruptive.

StarLadder quotes Valve in their announcement, saying that the VRS is moving towards its intended purpose- "standardizing community events for Major integration". The first stage of the StarLadder Budapest 2025 Major begins on 24th November 2025 and concludes with the grand final on 2nd December 2025.
