22nd Counter-Strike Major underway at Austin

Counter-Strike's 22nd Major, the BLAST.tv Austin 2025 Major is underway. The first stage of the Major features sixteen teams, all from MRQs. Three Swiss system iterations are played out before the playoffs and a single-elimination bo3 bracket determines the Major champion.

As we approach the midway phase of the first stage of the BLAST.tv Austin 2025 Major, let's roll back the years, take a trip down memory lane and look back at every single team who've been crowned as a Major champion so far. Let's start with the team with the most Major titles and move down the list.

Astralis

  • Major wins: 4

  • Grand-final appearances: 4

Astralis levels Fnatic's triple Major record at IEM Katowice 2019

Right at the top we have Astralis, one of the most decorated teams Counter-Strike has ever seen. With their other-worldly utility and team-play, Astralis changed how Counter-Strike was played forever during their triple Major run in 2018 and 2019. The Danes bagged their first Major trophy at ELEAGUE Atlanta 2017.

The team went on a dry run for a few months and things quickly clicked back in place upon Magisk's addition to the roster. Astralis started in the Challengers stage at the FACEIT London 2018 Major and cleared two Swiss system rounds and a single-elimination bracket playoffs to lift their second Major trophy. Their next win at IEM Katowice 2019 was a statement of dominance as the Danes did not drop a single match across the Major and not a single map in the playoffs.

Their last Major win came at StarLadder Berlin 2019 Major where they took down Avangar in the grand-final. Hitting the hattrick, Astralis had won three Majors in a row and four in total, the highest in the game's history.

Fnatic

  • Major wins: 3

  • Grand-final appearances: 4

Fnatic wins the first CS:GO Major at DreamHack Winter 2013

Coming in at second, we have the Swedish powerhouse Fnatic with three Major titles to their name. The pioneers of early Counter-Strike set the tone for Major dominance and high-level play. Their journey began at the very first Major, DreamHack Winter 2013, where they took down Ninjas in Pyjamas in what was an all-Swedish grand-final showdown.

Fnatic went through a rough patch after their debut Major win, with roster changes and inconsistent performances plaguing the team. However, the Swedes bounced back in spectacular fashion during 2015, capturing back-to-back Major trophies. Their first comeback victory came at ESL One Katowice 2015 where they defeated NiP again in the final, followed by another triumph at ESL One Cologne 2015 against Team EnVyUs. This double Major haul established Fnatic as the first team to reach three Major victories, a record that stood tall until Astralis surpassed them.

After their win at ESL One: Cologne 2015, Fnatic did not even make a Major final appearance. The Swedish org has not won an S-tier event in over five years as of now, with their last one coming at ESL Pro League Season 11: Europe in 2020 which also came after a three-year S-tier draught.

FalleN bags 2nd Major title for Brazilian Counter-Strike at Cologne 2016

As of today the 2016 Luminosity roster still stands as the only one to have won two consecutive Major titles in the same year, under two different banners. The Brazilian side stunned NAVI in the grand-final to lift their first ever Major trophy at MLG Columbus 2016.

Following their Columbus triumph, the roster switched organizations to SK Gaming and immediately proved their dominance wasn't a fluke. They captured their second Major trophy at ESL One Cologne 2016, this time defeating Liquid in the final.

Led by the tactical genius of FalleN and the explosive fragging potential of coldzera, SK Gaming put South American Counter-Strike on the map and showed the world that Major glory wasn't reserved for European teams alone.

NAVI

s1mple secures maiden Major title at PGL Stockholm 2021

At fourth place, we have NAVI with two Major wins, but their story is defined by persistence as much as success. NAVI holds the record for most Major grand-final appearances with six, making them the ultimate bridesmaid of Counter-Strike before their breakthrough arrived.

Their first Major victory came at PGL Stockholm 2021, where s1mple finally got his hands on the trophy that had eluded him for years. The Ukrainian superstar led NAVI past G2 Esports in the final, ending one of Counter-Strike's most heartbreaking narratives. Their second Major title came at PGL Copenhagen 2024.

This however, was completely different NAVI in a completely different game. The aleksib-led roster came under scrutiny often for falling short at concluding stages of big events. The roster however silenced all doubts, bagging Counter-Strike 2's first Major trophy.

donk becomes the youngest Major winner at Perfect World Shanghai 2024

donk announced his entry loud and clear at IEM Katowice 2024, dropping record breaking performance, to fetch Spirit their first IEM Katowice title. However, Spirit were stopped in their tracks by FaZe at Counter-Strike 2's first Major, PGL Copenhagen 2024 in the quarter-final.

Spirit's 2024 looked shaky after the first Major and they barely made it out of the European RMR for the Shanghai Major. Spirit cleaned up their act at Perfect World Shanghai 2024 with a 3-1 run in the elimination stage. Taking down Liquid and MOUZ, they came face to face with FaZe, the same team that removed them from contention in the previous Major.

A thrilling 3-map series turned out to be a nail-bitter as Spirit edged out FaZe in the decider with donk going ballistic with a 1.98 HLTV rating as FaZe suffered back to back Major grand-final losses. Spirit are coming into the BLAST.tv Austin 2025 Major as the defending champions.

Vitality's maiden Major trophy makes dupreeh 5-time Major winner

After their win at ESL Pro League Season 16 in October 2022, Vitality went on a title drought, failing to close out events after putting up strong starts. Right before the Paris Major, Vitality got a huge buff with a title win at IEM Rio 2023. BLAST.tv Paris 2023 was an emotional Major, a conclusion to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and the absolute magic it produced for fans event after event since 2013.

With upsets all across the Paris Major was turning out to be one of the most unpredictable Majors. Monte had taken down NAVI in the Legends Stage, denying s1mple a playoffs appearance. However, in the playoffs bracket Vitality were the favorites with ZywOo on song and they held true to the hype and support.

Vitality did not drop a single-map in the playoffs netting ZywOo his first Major trophy who was also awarded the MVP of the Major. dupreeh on the other hand became one of the most decorated individuals in Counter-Strike with five Major trophies to his name, at a time where a player would do anything and everything just to get a shot at the Major.

Outsiders upset HEROIC at IEM Rio 2022

Fresh out of Virtus.pro the Russian core, led by Jame had a hard time winning anything, let alone a Major. The team came short at IEM Cologne 2022, ESL Pro League Season 16 and handful of other A and S-tier events. Coming off of a win at ESL Challenger Rotterdam 2022, Outsiders was the last team anyone would have picked to walk away with the IEM Rio 2023 Major.

Taking down Vitality, Fnatic and IHC, in the Challengers Stage Outsiders quickly became the talking point and even so after they pulled off a 3-1 run in the Legends Stage. After going down to HEROIC, Outsiders made short work of NiP, Spirit and MOUZ, booking a playoffs spot but still no one was talking about Jame's team going the distance.

After wins against Fnatic and MOUZ, Outsiders setup a grand-final clash against HEROIC, who had taken down Outsiders in the first game of the Legends Stage. The community were abuzz talking about cadian's first Major trophy but Outsiders stunned the world, taking down HEROIC in a revenge match-up, stealing IEM Rio 2023, etching their names into the elites.

karrigan breaks grand-final curse at PGL Antwerp 2022

karrigan's FaZe were in sublime form towards the beginning of 2022, coming into the Antwerp 2022 Major off of consecutive S-tier event wins at IEM Katowice 2022 and ESL Pro League Season 15. FaZe comfortably made it to the playoffs and took down NiP and Spirit to book a grand-final spot.

But on the other side of the bracket were NAVI, the defending champions with s1mple looking to bag another Major trophy. Despite FaZe stellar start to 2022, a large chunk of the community were backing NAVI to comfortably clear the playoffs and win their second Major. After an overtime win in the first map, FaZe stunned NAVI with a dominant performance on Nuke, denying the defending champions as karrigan took FaZe to its maiden Major title.

Two Counter-Strike 2 Majors have concluded so far and FaZe has put up grand-final appearances both times, coming excruciatingly close to winning the Shanghai Major.

Cloud9 bag 1st and only NA Major on home turf

Cloud9 put North American Counter-Strike on the map with their win at ELEAGUE Boston 2018 but their ascent was a steep one. Cloud9 had won a few A-tier events towards the end of 2017 but playing at a Major was a whole another level. ELEAGUE Boston 2018 was the first S-tier event in 2018 and Cloud9 started in the Challengers Stage with a comfortable 3-0 over EnvyUs, Sprout and mousesports.

The going got tough when they locked horns with the big boys in the Legends Stage. After losses to G2 and Space Soldiers, Cloud9 went down to the 0-2 pool where they won every single match with their backs against elimination. They took down Virtus.pro, Astralis and Vega, pushing North American CS towards new heights.

After getting the better of G2 and SK Gaming, Cloud9 took on FaZe in the grand-final. The series went the distance and the decider went into double overtime where Cloud9 narrowly closed out the series, denying karrigan and NiKo a Major trophy, netting themselves and North American their first and only Major title.

LDLC secure maiden French Major trophy at DreamHack Winter 2014

Like many on the list, LDLC was struggling to find its footing in 2014 after being repeatedly sent home from big events by teams like Fnatic and NiP. Winning an A and C-tier event each before the first Major of 2014, LDLC were slowly building up towards a big title but were denied in the semi-final of ESL One Cologne 2014 by NiP who went on to win the Major.

LDLC flunked out of all events up until the next Major- DreamHack Winter 2014. Taking down NiP and ESC, the French side started with a 2-0 in the group stage. Taking down powerhouses like Fnatic and NAVI, LDLC's grand-final clash came against yet another unstoppable force- the defending champions NiP.

LDLC took down this new iteration of NiP, winning out DreamHack Winter 2014, becoming the first French team to lift a Major trophy.

NiP finally get their hands on elusive Major trophy at ESL One: Cologne 2014

In the early days of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Ninjas in Pyjamas were one of the most feared teams. Their 67-0 record stands till date as a symbol of one of Counter-Strike's most dominant runs. However, the coveted Major trophy kept eluding the Swedes, until the third Counter-Strike Major.

After failing to close out two consecutive grand-finals, NiP booked their routine playoffs appearance at ESL One Cologne 2014 after taking down Indian team Wolf and then closing out the decider game against HellRaisers. NiP clashed with Fnatic yet again in the grand-final.

Fnatic had taken down NiP in the grand-final of Counter-Strike's first Major at DreamHack Winter 2013. A thrilling three-map series saw NiP close out the grand-final and win their maiden trophy. NiP hold the record for the most consecutive grand-final appearances at five. NiP played every grand-final across the first five Majors.

VP deny NiP a Major title at EMS One Katowice 2014

The ESL Major Series One Katowice 2014 was the second Major for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive after DreamHack Winter 2013. After an overtime win against HellRaisers, Virtus.pro took down Titan in the winners' match to book a playoffs spot.

The community were almost evenly divided between their Major winning picks from the playoffs bracket. While some wanted NiP to get their hands on a Major trophy, some backed Virtus.pro and the beloved pashabiceps. On the other hand, another large chunk wanted Fnatic to defend their title.

Wins against Complexity and Dignitas set up Virtus.pro's grand-final clash against NiP. Comfortable wins on Mirage and Inferno saw Virtus.pro close out the grand-final 2-0 and deny NiP a Major trophy, winning their first.
